Cumberland County’s oldest lumber and building
material supply firm is a story of local and family
tradition. Harry H. Hankins, trained originally as
a ship builder in Dorchester, New Jersey, then joined
Bridgeton’s construction boom as a general contractor
in the late 1800’s. As his contracting business
grew,
his difficulty in obtaining
quality construction materials prompted a partnership

1900 with his brother, Frank M. Hankins, Sr., which
established the construction material supply business
at it's present day office location.
While Harry Hankins concentrated on the contracting
business division, building many well known area structures
like the Cumberland County Court House, Cohansey Hotel,
Ferracute office, Seabrook School, Greenwich School,
and the Cumberland County Hospital. Frank M. Hankins,
Sr., laid the groundwork for today’s large and
many-faceted construction material supply business,
H. H. Hankins & Bro.
While no longer active in the general contracting
business, H. H. Hankins & Bro. still maintains
strong expertise in this area. This expertise, coupled
with the organization’s strong family management
team, knowledgeable customer-oriented personnel, high
and varied inventory levels, and modern material handling
equipment has enabled the company to grow to its present
large proportions serving its ever increasing industrial,
commercial, contractor, and individual home owner
markets.
H. H. Hankins & Bro. today encompasses an entire
city block plus three separate warehouse locations.
The Hankins organization consists of a construction
material supply division, a modern builders and homeowners
hardware division and store, a cabinet division and
showroom and an “old fashioned” mill and
shop for custom milling operations. Quality product
lines of masonry, lumber, roofing, siding, windows,
doors, insulation, millwork, custom and stock cabinets,
drywall, paints, hardware, and many specialty products
enable
H. H. Hankins & Bro., to easily supply the construction
requirements of any project from start to finish.
The Hankins family management remains committed to
those business traditions established 114 years ago
in addition to their very progressive approach to
today’s markets. These policies, their concern
for providing quality materials, expert advice and
efficient material handling for their customers has
earned them the good will of a large clientele from
all sections of South Jersey.
